Details Summer, 1827. In a red barn in Suffolk, Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later, hidden in a grain sack under the floor of the barn, Maria's body is found, barely identifiable - and the manhunt begins... The Red Barn Murder had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama: a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But whilst sending shockwaves throughout the country, Maria's own story was lost. The Ballad of Maria Marten rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life. Written by Beth Flintoff

Details A Route Rich in Historical Significance The number 35 is a special bus route from a history lover’s perspective. It passes through, or near, 12 of Nottingham’s 17 Domesday communities, the site of a Roman Fort and the world’s first known railway built in 1603-4 to carry coal from Strelley to Wollaton. The route is also rich in housing of historical significance, from almshouses and ‘Garden City’ council estates to a Tudor mansion and a gated private estate. The countryside the 35 passes played a part in the origins of the industrial revolution. The modern world began here. The passenger with an active imagination might just glimpse the faces of 17th century pupils walking to school in Bulwell; miners going home after their shift down Cinderhill Colliery: Roman soldiers crossing the Broxtowe Estate. A little further, early Puritans on their way to Bilborough’s parish church; 16th century hewers in Strelley loading coal into horse drawn wagons on the railway. Climbing up towards Canning Circus, 18th century travellers would have passed through two toll gates and run the risk of being robbed by highwaymen. For most of the 20th century, the 35’s passengers would have been workers in the factories in and around Lenton. Smokers upstairs and, for a while, riding on trams and trolleybuses. At night going to a pub or catching a film at the Savoy Cinema. Now the faces on the bus belong to students and nurses, patients and shoppers, workers and mums with buggies or pensioners like me with shopping trollies. The 35’s downhill dash from Canning Circus to Nottingham skirts the city’s General Cemetery, where gravestones evoke endless stories. Compact as it is, I hope this tour encourages you to discover more about Nottingham and to share what you learn. Robert Howard

Details Scarborough, Whitby & York Resort - Scarborough Overview Scarborough is arguably the oldest seaside resort in Britain - a Dr Wittie of Scarborough was advocating sea bathing as long ago as 1660, more than a century before it became popular in Regency Brighton! But Scarborough is much older even than this - a cursory glance at the headland which divides Scarborough's two bays reveals the impressive medieval castle. The name Scarborough is a Viking one and the castle grounds conceal the remains of a Roman signal station. The busy harbour is haven to a welter of fishing vessels and there are the usual seaside pursuits a-plenty on the adjacent South Bay promenade which leads to the Spa. The steep hill sides are beautifully landscaped and there are many attractive parks and gardens. The resort is noted for its theatres and there is an art gallery and several small museums. Prices from £295 per person Supplements may apply Tour code: 5275M Tour: Scarborough, Whitby & York Resort: Scarborough Days: 5 Date Travelling: 19 October 2024 Travelling by: Coach Hotel: Cumberland Hotel Itinerary Day 1 - Outward Travel Day 2 - Whitby & North York Moors Admire the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park as we make our way to the harbour town of Whitby. We welcome members of the group to bring their own ideas and skills to share with the rest of us. I personally don’t profess to be an expert in any particular craft but I have ‘had go’ at many techniques and love trying out new things, preferring to make, create and upcycle where I can, rather than buy, so I’m looking forward to us all sharing our individual skills. Occasionally we may bring in a professional demonstrator to help us develop new areas of expertise. There will be a small charge, to cover tea/coffee and the cost of the room, (which will be dependent on numbers). We may need to ask for a contribution for materials. St Jude’s Hall is a great venue, with ample parking and accessible facilities and is located on Woodborough Rd, opposite Sainsbury’s. We don't all have the same gadgets but we have tried risottos in slow cookers, air fryers and pressure cookers with varying degrees of success, done curries in different ways, tried chips made from potatoes and cooked in an air fryer compared to oven ready frozen chips cooked in the fan oven, and made halloumi chips in the air fryer. We have tried different sweet treats, scones in the air fryer, sponge cake in a microwave, caramalized bananas, to name but a few. We have tried breakfast ideas made in different gadgets, lunch ideas and even a 3 course Christmas lunch. The group started up as Energy Efficient Cooking, when we thought we would concentrate on air fryers, slow cookers and microwaves. We decided though to change the name to Fun Cooking with gadgets and now the use of any of those gadgets we have stowed away in our kitchen cupboards is allowed and encouraged. And what are you prepared to sacrifice for love? Alexi Kaye Campbell’s award-winning debut is by turns raucously funny and deeply moving and poses important questions about the nature of liberation and the price we must pay for it. Play LMT d The Weir

Details by Conor McPherson Upstairs Studio (no lifts) Adult £13 Concession £12 “And there was a wind like this one tonight, howling and whistling in off the sea.” A play that transports you to County Leitrim in the north of Ireland, into a remote, cosy local pub on a blustery, stormy night. Some local fellas are keen to impress a new arrival, Valerie, and their light hearted banter soon leads on to a sharing of funny and often spellbinding stories. Each of the stories shared reveals something about its teller’s vulnerabilities and sparks telling reactions in their listeners. But Valerie has a tale of her own which has an unexpected twist. With rich Irish characters and irresistible comic, naturalistic dialogue, this spellbinding play contains the revelation of a shattering event which will not fail to move you. The Weir was written by renowned Irish playwright Conor McPherson in 1997. Contains strong langauge. Not suitable for young children. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern books

That would be hypocrisy” A witty and satirical play written by Oscar Wilde. Set in the late Victorian era, revolving around the lives of two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who create fictional alter egos to escape the constraints of their social obligations. Playfully challenging the values of the upper class and offering a humorous commentary on the absurdities of the time, Jack and Algernon reveal the consequences of living in a world where appearances often triumph over genuine character. The Importance of Being Earnest. A Trivial Comedy for Serious People.

A tale for a modern age: early one morning on Putney Bridge, three strangers' lives collided for one fleeting second. Inspired by real events, Once Upon a Bridge weaves a tale about human triumph and frailty, about the power of destiny and chance and why sometimes we choose to hate and other times, we choose to dance. Sonya Kelly's critically acclaimed play was premiered in The Mick Lally Theatre, Galway in February 2021, while under lockdown due to Covid-19. It was live streamed to homes in 36 countries around the world.

Play LMT h Romeo and Juliet

Meets 22nd February 2024
Venue
Normally starts 19:30 to 00:00
Contact NULL
Details by William Shakespeare in the Auditorium Adult £14 Concession £13 "These violent delights have violent ends, And in their triumph die like fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume." Romeo and Juliet are young, impatient, passionate and caught in a series of events which rapidly start spinning out of control in 15th century Verona. The other characters are equally affected as the entire action of the play takes place in less than a week. Shakespeare creates no effective voice of reason, allows no character the time to calmly consider their actions; the sun is hot, the mad blood is stirring and, just as we begin to hope that things might be working themselves out, he puts something in the way.

Play LMT j A Doll's House

Meets Thursday 18th April 2024
Venue Lace Market Theatre - map
Normally starts 19:30 to 00:00

Details by Henrik Ibsen in the Auditorium Adults £14 Concession £13 "...but you're dancing as if your life depended on it..." A married woman leaves her husband and family... but it is 1879. A furore flared up not only on stage but in contemporary reaction to the play across Europe. Norah is the wife of a professional in small town Norway. She has children, a comfortable home and much else... so why go and leave even your children behind? Ibsen wrote this winter play while living in Italy. The Italian warmth and sunny abandon of its tarantella dancing counterpoint the inhibitions of family life of the period. The dance itself is a pivotal moment. Paring back the original and giving it an up-to-date translation, Samuel Adamson's recent (and shorter than usual) adaptation reveals Norah's predicament afresh. It precipitates an unexpected modernity. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk

George Bernard Shaw described her parting gesture as the “slam heard round the world.” It is now 15 years since Nora slammed the door shut on her old life. However, a turn of events has decreed that Nora shall once more have to come through that door and confront everything again. What happened to Nora and how did their family move on? With all this in mind, what will their decision be this time? Contains strong language. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited

During a chance encounter on a train travelling across America, two men (Guy Haines and Charles Bruno) bond over how their future plans are each stymied by one person in their lives: Bruno by his controlling father, and Haines by his unfaithful wife Miriam. Charismatic psychopath Bruno suggests the perfect solution: they swap murders and no-one will ever be able to connect them with the deed. Haines laughs this off as a joke, unfortunately Bruno is deadly serious... Based on the acclaimed novel by Patricia Highsmith, which inspired the iconic Hitchcock film, Strangers on a Train is a tense, psychological thriller, which will keep you guessing until the nail-biting finale Copyright by Craig Warner, copyright agent Catherine King of 42 M & P Ltd, Palladium House, 1-4 Argyll St, London, W1F 7TA.

Details by Mike Leigh Auditorium Adults £14 concession £13 "Laurence, if you like olives, would you get them out please?" It's the 1970s. Beverley is hosting a ‘soirée' for her suburban neighbours. One guest, Susan, has a teenage daughter Abigail who is having a party of her own across the street. Olives, cheesy pineapples and G&Ts abound but as the evening progresses, the surface civility descends into pandemonium. Mike Leigh's iconic comedy is a timeless play about unhappy marriages and social aspirations. Conflicting cultural tastes illustrate the fundamental tensions amongst the characters. At times hilarious and at others excruciating, this nightmarish drinks party will leave a lasting impression!
