Details Set to fantastic 60s, 70s and 80s music, our qualified instructor motivates us in exercise activities such as cardiovascular exercises (heart and blood circulation) strength training and stretching. 30 minutes aerobics, 15 minutes weights and finally 15 minutes floor exercises and stretching. It is an enjoyable low impact aerobic session, suitable for people of all fitness levels. It’s a fun way to keep your body and brain active. Comfortable clothing and trainers are needed. You eventually need weights and a mat but we have spares available to borrow until you're sure which sizes are best for you.

Details Our meetings are very friendly and informal and we have always had good group participation. We will generally agree amongst ourselves which area of antiques and collectables we would like to find out more about, then we research the chosen subjects and discuss them at our monthly meetings. Most of our members are keen collectors and more than willing to bring along their treasures to share with us which means we very often have an interesting display from which we can try to identify the makers markings, or, as in some cases, suggest what the said item may be.

A garden group, with a difference, meeting monthly on Wednesday afternoons - our lovely members ranging in horticultural knowledge and ability but all sharing the same passion of gardens and gardening. Over the course of the year visits to horticultural places off interests are arranged, as well as members opening up their own gardens to share with others. Whenever we meet, over a cup of tea or coffee, any current, relevant, green-finger, information is shared and any new concepts or ideas for the group welcomed, so that everyone's supported and included.

Hikers

Details The Hikers provide longer walks than those organized by the Ramblers group and have joint walks in collaboration with Arnold U3A. Our walks usually last all day, covering a distance of 10 to 13 miles. These can be circular or linear walks e.g. we completed the full Robin Hood Way walk, which is 104 miles. We did this in 10 sections, catching buses and trams to get us to the start and from the finish of each section whenever practicable. Also, we have joined with other U3As to complete the Chesterfield Canal Walk. Our members take it in turns to plan and recce our monthly walks that are normally circular routes in interesting local countryside. We welcome new members to the Group.

History 1

Details This History group is studying British history in a chronological order from the Battle of Hastings in 1066 up to more modern history. So far the group has reached the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. Each member of the group researches and leads a topic for discussion. This is very much a self-taught group, all with a love of history but with widely varying existing knowledge. The group tries to encourage any special interests of particular members and has studied historical subjects that may feature in the current media.

Details Self Help Italian was formed in October 2022. Members meet once a week and use various teaching aids to learn the language, such as the book and YouTube videos of the BBC’s 'Buongiorno Italia', podcasts, and any other interesting source a member finds. The focus is on speaking rather than writing and grammar but a foundation of grammar and vocabulary would be useful. Sessions last for an hour and a half, but we take a fifteen-minute break halfway through for tea and biscuits and a friendly chat.

Mah-Jong

Details We are a small friendly group who enjoy both the game and each other's company. Our group is full at the moment, therefore we are sorry to say we're unable to accept any new enquiries to join us. Mahjong is a game that originated in China, normally played by four players (but three can play) at a square table. It is a game of skill and strategy and involves a certain degree of chance. Although it can be a gambling game, we play purely for fun! The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols and is started by building the 'great wall of China', discarding tiles and collecting sets until players complete a legal hand. By the end of the first session, you won't know it all, but you will know how to play and to form a basic Mahjong hand.

Fridays 10.30-12.30 plus any other times by arrangement We are a friendly group meeting regularly; some play at other clubs around the county. There are now four pistes. Equipment is supplied, although members may buy their own boules. Casual wear. No previous knowledge required. The game can be played with two or three in a team, with a maximum of six per piste.So we can now accomodate 24 players at a time.

Ukulele

Details We are a small group and whilst most of us do have our own ukulele, some members will lend you their spare one to practice on. There are many ukuleles for sale at very reasonable prices on eBay, such as soprano and the concert size. We don’t need to read music, we strum and sing to a varied choice of music from Country to 60s songs, and old-time music hall. We just have great fun. Learning something new is wonderful, it’s a great feeling to be able to play a tune and enjoy singing and strumming along.

University Interest Group

Details This group serves as an email dissemination list for people interested in University related activities. Activities include specific visits to research groups arranged by Trevor Wright (where the group will have priority booking) and information on public talks, lectures and demonstrations at the universities. Looking longer term it will also consider if there is a role for a more formal engagement with local universities.

Water Colour Painting

Details We are a sociable Group of like minded people meeting together and exchanging ideas. We mostly have different subjects at each session, decided by the Group. We like to share knowledge and experience between members of the Group, given our different abilities. Like many of the Groups in our u3a we meet in a member’s home, which limits the number that can be accommodated at our meetings, and we have a waiting list. We need a member to come forward to be the Co-ordinator for an additional water colours Group. If you enjoy painting in water colours, do volunteer to be the Co-ordinator for a potential new “ Water Colour Painting 2”.

Wine Tasting

Details The wine group (usually) meets every month on the fourth Thursday at the Church Centre or the Carnarvon room. Members take it in turns to host an event based on a theme of their choice. For example, recent themes have been on Old World v New World, Supermarket Favourites, Strawberries & Fizz, Christmas, and Wines of Alsace. The cost, to cover wine, nibbles, and room hire, is typically around £8 per person per session.
