u3a activities are social groupings where people of similar interests meet each other and exchange their views , practical hints, knowledge etc, e.g. a Discussion group exchanges ideas, a Gardening or Woodworking group gives practical hints etc.
This New To Writing group is a mixture of the above.
It is, I hope, a social group. These are people who enjoy language and the practical skills language employs.
It is also a theoretical/practical group in that we will look at how a piece of writing is constructed.
It asks you to use and develop your imagination.
We all have an imagination. For many of us, imagination atrophies through disuse, but it is still there, waiting in the wings.
You all were children, you all played games, you all became a cowboy/girl, or a heroic nurse, or an intrepid explorer. That child is still there, but the imagination has fallen out of use. You learned the right language for your particular job and daydreaming became impractical.
In this course I want you to dust off your imagination, to re-train it, make it work.
There are practical tasks that help you construct a piece of fiction and non fiction.
Your most important tasks are to entertain and engage your audience. That is the power of words and language
You have, say, a story that you know is entertaining, or interesting, or fascinating, or intriguing.
With writing you can tell the story to more than one person AND leave them wanting more. |
