Bourne is set against a backdrop of Neolithic ritual sites, Bronze-Age burial mounds, feats of Roman engineering and ancient churches and religious houses. Although this light-hearted PowerPoint presentation mainly explores the vestiges of the Anglo-Saxon age through its art, archaeology, architecture and landscape, it inevitably encroaches upon other periods of history. It also introduces characters whose names have become embedded in South Lincolnshire’s history. They include the enigmatic Saints Firmin and Pega, Guthlac of Crowland and his hermits and home-grown ‘hero’, freedom-fighter and ‘man of the monks’, Hereward [the Wake]’, who has been dubbed ‘The last Englishman’.
The Talk will last approximately 45-50 minutes and Dr Lumley Prior will welcome questions from the audience afterwards.|
